Opium and its derivatives (which include morphine, heroin, oxycodone, and the synthetic opioid narcotics) generate an abnormal mental state, generally characterized by excessive sleepiness or unconsciousness (depending on the degree of intoxication), and usually associated with respiratory depression and small pupils.
