A new law requires hospitals to publicly report their infection rates, but they aren’t complying yet. The state is giving them extra time to compile the data.
It’s estimated hospital infections kill 80-thousand Americans a year. The new law is intended to help consumers make better choices and pressure hospitals to reduce those rates.
Hospitals say that’s not as easy as it sounds. They are concerned broad standards could end up forcing them to draft paperwork for ailments as minor as diaper rash.
The Agency for Healthcare Administration has put together a panel to draft the standards for hospital infection rates.
The committee may use a formula that accounts for differences between large and small hospitals and those that handle more serious cases.
