New skin care regimen proves effective for Rosacea

Skin CareMay 31, 2006

Rosacea is a disabling skin condition characterized by facial redness and has historically been challenging to treat.

But, new research published by leading dermatologist Zoe Diana Draelos, MD in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, reveals that azelaic acid 15% gel used in combination with a polyhydroxy (PHA) acid skin care regimen is more effective than using an individual, self-selected skin care routine.

“Rosacea is particularly problematic for women who on one hand, are socially embarrassed by the facial stigmata of rosacea, and on the other, are often unable to tolerate common skin care products for cleansing and moisturizing, or to improve the appearance of aged skin,” states Dr. Draelos, Clinical Associate Professor, Wake Forest University School of Medicine. “I’m happy to report that medical treatment with azelaic acid and skin care products containing polyhydroxy acids can decrease the signs and symptoms of rosacea.”

Based on this new development, rosacea patients should think twice before selecting their own skin care products and consult a dermatologist to learn more about the benefits of PHA treatment.
