A baby is in critical condition after somehow ending up out of her crib and on the floor at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
The 8-month-old was bleeding on the floor, officials said.
CCMC officials said the baby was under 24-hour surveillance.
The hospital is a lockdown facility, NBC 30 Connecticut News reported. Only employees can gain access through electronic identification devices.
“We’re not saying it was an assault. All we know is that the baby was found injured. We’re trying to determine the cause,” CCMC spokesman Tom Hanley said.
A nurse said she found the infant on the floor at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The baby was then rushed to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, officials said.
Hartford police were investigating the incident, trying to determine if the baby’s injuries were an accident or if the baby was badly beaten, NBC 30 Connecticut News reported.
Hartford police Chief Daryl Roberts said the baby suffered brain trauma.
The baby has been hospitalized at CCMC since birth. A spokesman said the baby parent’s visit on a daily basis but won’t confirm if family members were at the hospital Saturday night.
The hospital said it has security cameras in hallways and elevators.
Police and hospital officials said they are not ruling out a possible security breach.
“The police are here. They’ll be conducting an investigation and they’re talking to everyone on the floor,” the spokesman said.
Hospital officials said all employees who were working Saturday night, including doctors and nurses, have been questioned by police.
CCMC said they would cooperate fully with the police investigation.
