Take Control of Diabetes

Diabetes newsMay 07, 2010

The Tulane School of Medicine is one of the partners participating in the Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference and Health Fair on Saturday (May 8) at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, La.

The event opens at 7:30 a.m. with registration, followed by the morning session beginning at 9 a.m. It includes workshops, foot screenings, physical activities and health fair exhibits, as well as luncheon guest speaker Ben Vereen, renowned singer, dancer and actor who has diabetes. The closing session at 4:30 p.m. features Charlie Kimball, Indy Lights race care driver, talking about “Diabetes Doesn’t Slow Me Down!”

On-site registration is $15 per person, but financial aid is available for those in need.

Diabetes expert Dr. Vivian Fonseca, chief of endocrinology and metabolism at Tulane, is one of the conference co-directors, along with Dr. Lawrence Blonde, director of the Ochsner Diabetes Clinical Research Unit in New Orleans, and Dr. Steven Edelman, founder and director of the Taking Control of Your Diabetes organization.

Top physicians, diabetes educators and foot specialists are involved in the sessions. In addition, the health fair will showcase the latest technologies and advances in diabetes care.

Workshop sessions will include such topics as “The Latest on Continuous Glucose Monitoring,” “Oh My Aching Feet: Cutting Edge Treatments for Neuropathy,” and “Insulin Use and Type 2 Diabetes: Is It Right for You?”

The comprehensive event is a one-of-a-kind learning opportunity for people living with diabetes and those at risk, as well as their loved ones, said Julia Baron, marketing and outreach manager with Taking Control of Your Diabetes.

In addition, anyone interested in raising funds for diabetes research can get involved in the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure bike ride. The New Orleans-area event will be held on Sunday, May 23, at the Tammany Trace Trailhead in Mandeville, La. Check here for additional details.
