Treatment Approaches for Undifferentiated Somatoform Disorder

There have been few reports about treating or managing undifferentiated somatoform disorder. Investigators of patients with this disorder generally make treatment recommendations that are the same as for patients with somatization disorder. Results from G. R. Smith et al.‘s (1995) study have provided experimental evidence that the same conservative management approach used for patients with somatization disorder is cost-effective and improves the health of patients with undifferentiated somatoform disorder.

Until more extensive data are available, conservative management appears to be the most prudent and potentially helpful approach for treating undifferentiated somatoform disorder.
