Levitra works for up to 10 hrs - study
Levitra, an impotence treatment, worked for up to 10 hours in a study of 383 patients, Bayer, the German drugs and chemicals group said on Monday.
Bayer said in a statement that Levitra, which competes with Viagra from Pfizer and Cialis from Eli Lilly and ICOS Corp, allowed patients to have sex between six and 10 hours after taking the drug.
”Levitra provides both a quick onset and an extended duration of efficacy up to 10 hours,” lead investigator Hartmut Porst said in the statement.
"At the end of the study almost three times as many men on vardenafil compared to those on placebo reported improved erections,” he said. Around half the patients in trial were given Levitra and the other half placebos or dummy pills.
Vardenafil is the chemical ingredient in Levitra.
The study results were presented at the World Congress of Sexology at Montreal in Canada.
Bayer says studies show that Levitra can produce an erection in as little as 10 minutes in some men following sexual stimulation.
Levitra, Viagra and Cialis are all part of a drug class called PDE-5 inhibitors, which enhance or prolong erections by blocking an enzyme called PDE-5.
