The drug alfuzosin relieves the symptoms of sexual dysfunction, which are common in men with lower urinary tract symptoms, a multinational team reports in the medical journal BJU International.
Dr. R. Jeroen A. van Moorselaar, at University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands, and colleagues evaluated 2434 men with lower urinary tract symptoms and who were sexually active. The average age of the subjects was 69 years old.
The men were treated with alfuzosin 10 mg. They completed questionnaires scoring their symptoms at the beginning of the study and every three months for up to one year.
At the beginning of the study, more than 60 percent of the men reported reduced stiffness of erection or reduced volume of ejaculate. Approximately 20 percent reported pain or discomfort on ejaculation. Sexual symptom scores were strongly related to lower urinary tract symptoms severity and the level of satisfaction with their current situation.
By the end of the study, prostate symptom questionnaire scores had declined by about 32 percent. For men with mild to severe scores at the beginning of the trial, changes in penile stiffness, ejaculate volume and painful ejaculation scores improved significantly.
Although “sexual dysfunction is often perceived by urologists to be of secondary concern to older men,” the authors note, “the present data show that this is not the case.”
This study was funded by Sanofi-Aventis, a manufacturer of alfuzosin.
